Located along Lake Hiawassee within the Nantahala National Forest, Hanging Dog Recreation Area offers a variety of amenities and recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, fishing, water skiing, kayaking, and a picnic area. There are several opportunities for mountain biking. Hike or ride your mountain bike on the moderately-difficult Ramsey Bluff Mountain Biking System that provides 8 miles of trails. Plenty of trailhead parking is provided at the end of SR 1447.

Directions: Take Joe Brown Highway (NC 1326) north out of Murphy, drive about 5 miles, then turn left at the Hanging Dog Recreation Area sign.

For hiking and/or mountain biking, try one of these trails:
Farmer Top Overlook –  0.80 mile
Nottely River Connector – 0.39 mile
Ramsey Bend Connector – 1.9 mi
Ramsey Bend North – 2.1 miles
Ramsey Bend South – 1.8 miles
Ramsey Bluff – 0.97 miles (hikers only)
